Installing NVIDIA drivers

From Animuxwiki

Jump to: navigation, search

Animux provides the easiest way to install the NVIDIA drivers that operate your NVIDIA video cards. On the other distributions you have to compile the drivers for your machine. This means you have to install the C compilers, download the appropriate kernel code and NVIDIA drivers and all the other system administration tasks that need to prepare the installation.

Animux has been built keeping in mind that animators are not system administrators. Our goal has been to remove the requirement of system administration from an animator's job requirements. So, we have taken upon ourselves to take the necessary steps to develop tools and install script that do all the required tasks for you. The nvidia install script is one such artifact, from a long list of such install/action scripts to follow.

Steps to install the nvidia drivers

  1. Download the NVIDIA driver for your architecture (assumption /home/animator/downloads/NV_drivers.sh) from the link on our download page
  2. log into the super user account running the sudo command or su command
  3. run the command /etc/init.d/gdm stop
  4. the above command will stop your GUI and bring you to the command prompt
  5. change directory into the required folder by typing cd /home/animator/downloads
  6. change the script to be executable by running chmod 755 NV_drivers.sh
  7. run the command using ./NV_drivers.sh
  8. answer "Yes" to all the questions
  9. after successful execution of the script start your GUI by running /etc/init.d/gdm start
